Who joins an affiliate program? The most common group of people who want to become rich quickly and easily using their computer, the majority of which will never become productive affiliates. The second most common group is webmasters who have some good content and regular traffic, but are looking for a way to generate revenue from their web site. (Note these classifications are not based on quantifiable data; these are simply my impressions of the industry.)
When a webmaster decides to incorporate an affiliate program in their site, how do they go about selecting one? Most will type “best affiliate programs” or “affiliate reviews and ratings” in their favorite search engine and wind up at an affiliate directory. Similar to Yahoo!’s site directory, affiliate directories group programs into categories that allow webmasters to quickly locate the opportunities that best correlate with the content of their site.

One of the main reasons why people end up feeling that affiliate URL cloaking isn’t as ‘important’ as they’re made out to be is simply because even after cloaking links – some people still don’t manage to make the kind of money that they desire from affiliate marketing. But does that mean that the cloaked links themselves are a problem, or the affiliate marketing strategy that is being employed is at fault?
Frankly speaking, cloaked links aren’t a ‘miracle cure’. If you were getting zero sales from your affiliate products previously, simply cloaking your affiliate links is not going to suddenly get you hundreds of sales on a daily basis. Sure, you might get an extra sale here and there, but if you aren’t already making money through affiliate marketing, chances are that there are other things that are wrong with your affiliate marketing strategy.
