One of the most important component about affiliate marketing is choosing the right product to promote. Truth is, even if you have an avalanche of traffic going to your offer, if the product that you choose to promote isn’t worth a dime, you are not going to see much sales. In worse case, you may even tarnish your reputation within your niche as someone who recommend crappy products.

So just how do you go about choosing the right product to promote? Here are 4 factors you need to look at before deciding on a product:

1) Demand – Is there any demand for the product? There are many products out there that were put together in an afternoon without much research done at all. If the product does not have enough demand, drop it. Look for a product that many people want and need. These can be in the form of tutorials, memberships, how-to guides, videos and etc.

2) Commission – How is the commission structure like? What is your bottom line commission? It is better to look at the final amount that you will get rather than just looking at the percentage offered. I’m sure you’ll agree that a 30% commission of $100 is better than a commission of 75% of a $10 product. Also you may want to consider if the product is recurring or a one time payment. Sometimes, it is worthwhile to promote a recurring commission that pays $10 as opposed to a one time $50 commission.

3) Conversion – Is the sales letter of the product convincing? Are the order buttons clearly visible? Also check for bonuses that the product owner offers. Are the bonuses enticing or are they just a bunch of useless materials that most likely nobody cares to have. If a sales letter is not convincing, you will have a harder time converting visitors to buyers.

4) Tools – Are there any tools created for the affiliates? Although I do not recommend using those “canned” ads that come with the affiliate tools, having good graphics, testimonials, background story, etc can be very useful for you to use in your marketing. Having a series of affiliate tools can also be a good indication of how serious the product owner is in providing support for his or her affiliates.

Even if it takes you a little longer to choose the right product, it is worth the time to make sure that you choose a winner. After all, you do not want to spend all the time and effort on your marketing to find out that you are promoting a dead duck. If you do the research well right at the start, chances of you making sales down the road are much greater.
